পল মালডুন

উত্তর আয়ারল্যান্ডের একটি কৃষিপ্রধান ক্যাথলিক পরিবারে ১৯৫১ সালের ২০ জুন জন্ম। বেলফাস্টের কুইন’স ইউনিভার্সিটিতে ইংরাজি সাহিত্য নিয়ে পড়াশোনা। ‘ফেবার অ্যান্ড ফেবার’ থেকে প্রথম পূর্ণাঙ্গ কাব্যগ্রন্থ নতুন আবহাওয়া প্রকাশিত হওয়ার সময় কলেজের সহ-পাঠিকা অ্যান-মারি কনওয়ের সঙ্গে ঘনিষ্ঠতা বাড়ে। ১৯৭৩-এ একসঙ্গে স্নাতক হওয়ার পর-পরই তাঁরা বিয়ে করেন, যদিও সে-বন্ধন মাত্র বছর চারেক স্থায়ী হয়েছিল। ইস্ট অ্যাংলিয়ার বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে, কেমব্রিজের ফিটজউইলিয়াম কলেজ ও কাইয়াস কলেজে পড়ান, পরে ১৯৮৭-তে প্রিন্সটনের সৃজনী লেখন কর্মসূচিতে পড়ানোর সুযোগ পেয়ে চলে যান আমেরিকায়। ১৯৯৯-২০০৪ তিনি ইংল্যান্ডের অক্সফোর্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে কাব্য-অধ্যাপক নিযুক্ত ছিলেন। কাব্যগ্রন্থ রচনার পাশাপাশি সংকলন-সম্পাদনা, সমালোচনা-প্রবন্ধ, শিশুসাহিত্য, অনুবাদ ইত্যাদি কাজ এবং সর্বোপরি বিভিন্ন অপেরা, নাট্যদল ও ব্যান্ডের জন্য গীতিকবিতা রচনা করেছেন এই বিশিষ্ট কবি। পোয়েট্রি সোসাইটি (ইউকে)-র সভাপতি এবং দ্য নিউ ইয়র্কার-এর কবিতা-সম্পাদক।

ময় পল্লির নাচিয়েরা

ইতালীয় এই চক-চৌমাথা ঘিরে
যতটুকু ছিল সমতলভূমি, তাও
একদিন ঘোড়া আর ঘোটকীর ভিড়ে
ঠিক ছেয়ে যেত কালো-রঙে সবটাই,
ঢেউহারা স্থির কৃষ্ণানদীটি ধীরে
নুড়ি ও পাথর উল্টেপাল্টে নিত

ঘণ্টার পর অনেক ঘণ্টা ধরে ধরে
কালো বৃষ্টির নীচে দূর প্রেক্ষিতে
যখন তাদের খুরগুলো ঝলমল ক’রে
একসাথে সব হয়ে যেত উত্থিত,
নির্ঘাত কোনও গ্রিক-যুদ্ধের তোড়ে
শহরতলিটি এ-সময় হত কালো রঙে রঞ্জিত

এত ঘন কালো ইতিহাসে নেই জুড়ি
ক্ষুধার্ত সব অশ্ব এবং তাদের অশ্বিনীতে
ছেয়ে যেত রং অভূতপূর্ব ঘোরে
চামড়ায় গড়া যেন হ্যামকের মতো,
নিজেকে রাখতে পারত না আর ধ’রে
ঢেউহারা স্থির কৃষ্ণানদীর স্রোতও

যেই-না ঘোড়ারা ঝপাং-ঝপাং করে
লাফিয়ে পড়ত শস্যদানার ক্ষেতে
কালো ও সোনালি নদীটির অন্তরে।
আথেন্সপ্রদেশী কোনও জোট-জমায়েতই
ময়ের মেলায় নিজেদের অভিযাত্রার
ক্রয়-কারবারে আসেনি পৌঁছে যেতে,

সই হয়েছিল সন্ধিপত্রে
এবং ঘোষণা হয়ে গিয়েছিল শান্তির।
কালো ও সোনালি নদীধারা
শেষ হত এক টুপটুপ-ঝরা বাদামি ঝোরার গতে
যেখানে সে-সব ঘোড়াগুলো ঝোপঝাড়ে
কাঁটায়-কাঁটায় হত ক্ষতবিক্ষত,

একে-অপরের মাংস কামড়ে খেত তারা
মন্বন্তরপীড়িত লোকের মতো,
ঢেউহারা স্থির কৃষ্ণানদীর জলধারা
বন্য স্খলিত দুর্ভার ক্রান্তিতে
আর ঝুঁকে-পড়া শিরদাঁড়াটির ভারে
নিজের উপল-পাথরে টলমলাত,

স্থানীয় লোকেরা ক’রে নিয়েছিল জড়ো
কুড়িয়ে-বাড়িয়ে কঙ্কাল সাদা সাদা।
ভিতের তলায় বছর বছর ধরে
গোরে ডুবে থাকা ঘোড়াগুলো কতশত
মৃন্ময় যত মেঝেকে প্রদান করে
গভীর আরাম ট্রামপোলিনের স্বস্তি।

শজারু

শামুক চলে ফিরে বেড়ায়
নিজেরই রাবারের গদিতে তুলে-ধরা
হভারক্র্যাফটের মতো,
সে ভাগ করে তার গুপ্ত কথা

একটি শজারুর সঙ্গে। শজারুটি
কারও সাথেই ভাগ করে না গোপনতা তার।
আমরা বলি, ওহে শজারু, এসো তুমি নিজেরই
ভেতর থেকে সোজা বেরিয়ে, তারপর তোমাকে ঠিক ভালবাসব।

আমরা কোনও ক্ষতি চাই না। শুধু চাই
যা কিছু কইবার আছে তোমার, তাই
শুনতে। আমাদের প্রশ্নগুচ্ছের
জবাবগুলো চাই তোমার কাছে।

কাঁটাচুয়াটি কোনও কিছুই খুলে
ধরে না, নিজেকে সে নিজের ভেতরেই রাখে।
আমরা বিস্ময়ে ভাবি, কী কথা থাকে একটা শজারুর
লুকিয়ে রাখবার, কেন সে করে এত অবিশ্বাস।

এই কাঁটায় ভরা মুকুট-তলে
আমরা দেবতাকে ভুলেই যাই।
আমরা ভুলে যাই, কখনও আর
বিশ্বে রাখবে না আস্থা একজনও দেবতা।

ব্রাউনলি কেন চলে গিয়েছিল

ব্রাউনলি কেন চলে গিয়েছিল, আর গিয়েছিলই-বা কোথায়
সেটা এক রহস্য এখনও।
কারণ এ-দুনিয়ায় একজনও কারও যদি থেকে থাকে সন্তুষ্ট হওয়ার কথা তবে
সে ছিল তেমনই লোক; পাঁচ-ছ’ বিঘা যবক্ষেত,
আলুর একটি, আরও কত? চার-চারটে বলদ,
একটা দুধেল গাই, পাকা এক খামার-দালান।
ঝলমলে, ভোর-ভোর, কোনও এক বসন্ত সকালে
তাকে শেষ দেখা গেছে চাষ করতে যেতে।

দুপুর হতে-না-হতে ব্রাউনলি বিখ্যাত হয়ে গেল;
লোকজন মাঠে গিয়ে দেখল সমস্ত কিছু পরিত্যক্ত পড়ে আছে,
শেষ আলে ঢেলাগুলো ভাঙা হয়নি, মালিকের একজোড়া কালো
ঘোড়া, ঠিক স্বামী-স্ত্রীর মতো, পায়ে-পায়ে
বদলে নিচ্ছে তাদের ওজন,
আর ভবিষ্যতের ভেতর স্থির চোখ মেলে আছে।
