জন্ম ও বেড়ে ওঠা বারাসাতে। প্রেসিডেন্সি কলেজে সাহিত্য নিয়ে পড়ার সময় থেকেই অন্য ধারার গল্প নিয়ে কাজ করতে চেয়েছেন। পরে জাদুবাস্তবতা ও বাংলা সাহিত্য নিয়ে গবেষণা সম্পূর্ণ করেন যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে।লাতিন আমেরিকান ও রুশ সাহিত্যের প্রতি তার প্রবল আগ্রহ। গল্পগ্রন্থ একটি-তৃতীয় পৃথিবীর নিঃসঙ্গতা (২০২০)।

নর্দমা

খুন হয়ে যাওয়ার দুই বছর আগেই দীপ শেখর চক্রবর্তী শেষবারের মতো এসেছিল এই ছোট শহরটিতে। যদিও তখন এখানে সন্ধের মাংসের দোকানে এত দীর্ঘ লাইন দেখা যেত না। ঘরের বাইরে আগুন জ্বালানো এখনও নিষিদ্ধ এই শহরে। এছাড়া বেশ্যাপল্লিটি আয়তনে কমেছে,তার পাশ দিয়ে উঠেছে সরকারি আবাসন। ঠিক পেছনে একটা বড় নর্দমা।নর্দমাটি আয়তনে এতটাই বড় যে সরকারের তরফ থেকে তাকে সাজিয়ে গুছিয়ে তোলার একটা ব্যবস্থা করা হয়েছিল। এমনকি একসময় দেখা যায় যে নর্দমাটি এই শহরের একমাত্র নদীটির থেকে চওড়া হয়ে গিয়েছে। কথাটি সরকারের কানে যাওয়া মাত্রই নৌকাবিহারের সমস্ত আয়োজন নদী থেকে নর্দমায় সরিয়ে দিয়েছিল ওরা।দীপ কেন এই ছোট শহরে এসেছিল সেই নিয়ে সঠিক তথ্য কেউ দিতে পারে না। কারো কারো মতে কোনও বন্ধুর সঙ্গে দেখা করতে। একটু রসিয়ে ইঙ্গিতপূর্ণ হাসি হেসে কেউ বলে,বন্ধু নয় বান্ধবী। কেউ বলেন লেখা সংক্রান্ত কোনও কাজে। কেউ কেউ এমন মনে করেন যে বিভিন্ন ছোট শহরের নেশাচক্রের সঙ্গে ওর গোপন যোগাযোগ আছে।যদিও ও এসে কোথায় উঠেছিল এবং কী কী করেছে এই নিয়ে কেউ কিছুই বলতে পারে না।

তবে এসমস্ত খবর আমি কিছু কিছু পাই। একুশে ডিসেম্বর সকালে দীপ একজনের সঙ্গে দেখা করে শহরের চিড়িয়াখানার সামনে যেখানে কিছু পুরোনো বেবুন এবং অসভ্য একটা হরিণের দল ছাড়া কিছুই নেই।দুজনে একটা টিকিট কেটে ভেতরের দিকে চলে যায় এবং অবশেষে একা বেরিয়ে আসে দীপ। ঠিক তখন থেকেই হয়ত দীপের মনে এই উন্মাদনাটা চরমে ওঠে যে ওকে কেউ খুন করতে চায়। পরিস্থিতি এমন জটিল হয়ে উঠেছিল যে সত্যি সত্যি খুন হয়ে যাওয়ার আগে দীপ যাকে বলে বদ্ধ উন্মাদ হয়ে উঠেছিল। সর্বদা নিজের আশেপাশে অদ্ভুত এক ছায়া দেখতে পেত ও। বাস্তবে ছায়াই বলা যায় তাকে কারণ খুন হয়ে যাবার এতদিন পরও পুলিশ কাউকে গ্রেপ্তার করতে পারেনি। সংবাদপত্র শুধুমাত্র পুরোনো শত্রুতা নাম দিয়ে বিষয়টিকে এড়িয়ে যেতে চেয়েছে।

একজন লেখকের মৃত্যুর জন্য খবরের কাগজ এর থেকে বেশি একটি শব্দও ছাপতে রাজি নয়।
দীপের এই ছোট শহরে আসার কারণ যাই থাকুকনা কেন এই কথা সত্যি যে সে রাত কাটিয়েছিল এই অঞ্চলের ডাকসাইটে সুন্দরী ইন্দিরা সেনের ঘরে।সেখানেই ওর নিমন্ত্রণ ছিল।এমনকি শোনা যায় সকালবেলা ওরা ঘুরতে গিয়েছিল পুরোনো চার্চের দিকটায়,তারপর মাছের বাজারে এবং মধ্যেখানে ঘুরে এসেছে শখের বনের ভেতরে। যদিও শখের বন জায়গাটি শুধুমাত্র প্রেমিক প্রেমিকাদের জন্যই কিন্তু শুধুমাত্র এই কারণবশত কোনও সিদ্ধান্তে আসাটা অনুচিত হবে।এই ছোট শহরটির সরকার দীপের এই আসা নিয়ে খুব চিন্তিত ছিল বলে শোনা যায়।বিশেষত তখন সামনে নির্বাচন। কোনো এমন লোককে বিশ্বাস করা কঠিন যে লেখে। লেখা মানে আশপাশকে অনেকভাবে দেখতে পারা।ঝোলা থেকেই বেড়ালেরা এতে করে সহজেই বেরিয়ে আসতে পারে। ফলে সরকার প্রথম নিজে থেকেই দীপকে আদর আপ্যায়নের ব্যবস্থা করে দিতে চাইলো।দীপের মতো একজন লেখক যে এখানে এসেছেন সেটা যে কতবড় সৌভাগ্যের তা নানাভাবে বুঝিয়ে দিতে চেয়েছিল সরকার। তবে লাভ হয়নি।

কোনোভাবেই দীপকে বাক্সবন্দী করে রাখতে পারেনি ওরা।
আমার এমন সন্দেহ হয়েছে যে লোকটির সঙ্গে দীপ চিড়িয়াখানার সামনে দেখা করেছিল,ঢুকেছিল এবং যাকে পরবর্তীতে আর খুঁজে পাওয়া যায়নি সে কোনও সরকারি গুপ্তচর।দীপকে জিজ্ঞেস করলে নিশ্চিত অস্তিত্ববাদ নিয়ে লম্বা চওড়া একটা জ্ঞান ঝেড়ে দিত কিন্তু সেটি হওয়ার সু্যোগ আর নেই। দীপ খুন হয়ে গেছে এই ছোট শহরটি থেকে অনেক দূরে। ভোর তখন পাঁচটা, সাড়ে পাঁচটা।জানুয়ারি মাস এবং হাড় কাঁপানো শীত। এমনিতে কখনোই ওর ভোরে ওঠার অভ্যেস নেই কিন্তু সেদিন কি অজানা কারণে বেরিয়েছিল সেটি কেউ জানে না। খুব কাছ থেকে একটা ছুড়ি এফোঁড় ওফোঁড় করে দিয়েছিল বুকটা। কাউকে এখনও অবধি গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়নি। আরও আশ্চর্য রাস্তার কোথাও একফোঁটা রক্ত ছিলনা,মৃতদেহ পাওয়া যায়নি। দীপের মৃত্যুর পর এইসব ভাবতে ভাবতে আমি খুব ক্লান্ত হয়ে উঠি। অনেকটা সময় পেরিয়ে গেলো। এই ছোট শহরটায় সরকারের পতন আসন্ন।মনে হয় গোটা শহরটাই ক্রমাগত ধর্মান্ধদের হাতে চলে যাচ্ছে।এদিকে এখনও বাড়ির বাইরে আগুন জ্বালানো নিষেধ। মাংসের দোকানের লাইন দীর্ঘ হয়ে উঠছে এবং ধীরে ধীরে শহরে বেড়ে উঠছে বিভিন্ন মূর্তি।নানারকম মূর্তি।

দেশনায়ক,জাতিনায়ক,ধর্মনায়ক।নিজেদের মূর্তিগুলো আরও বড় করে তুলতে চাইছেন সরকারি আমলারাও। শহরের নর্দমাটির আকার এত বড় হয়েছে যে এক পাড় থেকে অন্য পাড় আর দেখা যায় না। এদিকে নদীটি ছোট হয়ে গেছে, এক লাফে সহজেই পার হয়ে যেতে পারে যেকোনও সাধারণ মানুষ। দীপ সম্পর্কে তেমন কথা শুনিনা আজকাল। হতে পারে ইচ্ছে করে ও মানসিক ভারসাম্য হারানোর নাটকটি করে করেছিল। নইলে এমন একজনকে কেন খুন হতে হবে যে মানসিক ভারসাম্য হারিয়ে ফেলেছে।অতীত জীবনের কথা যার কিছুমাত্র মনে নেই।
তবে কিছুদিন পর সংবাদপত্রে একটা খবর দেখলাম।বহুদিন পর সংবাদপত্র পড়ার আগ্রহ জাগলো। ইন্দিরার সাক্ষাৎকার, যেখানে সে বলেছে দীপের সঙ্গে কাটানো সেই রাতের সম্পর্কে।সেদিন রাতে যথেষ্ট মাংস ও মদ খেয়ে অনেকক্ষণ গল্প করার পর ইন্দিরা চলে যায় নিজের ঘরে শুতে।যদিও দীপের প্রতি একটা তীব্র আকর্ষণ অনুভব করছিল ইন্দিরা। কিন্তু বিপরীত দিকে সেরকম কোনও ইঙ্গিত আসেনি।ফলে বিষয়টি কোথাও পৌঁছল না। ইন্দিরার কথায়-
‘একটা খুব ভালো মানের সঙ্গম আমরা বিছানায় ফেলে এসেছিলাম।এই জন্য আমি খুব হতাশ হয়েছিলাম।’

এই সাক্ষাৎকার দেওয়াটাই হয়ত ইন্দিরার পক্ষে খুব একটা ভাল হলনা,অথবা হল-ঠিক জানি না।দীপের একটি বই বেরনোর প্রস্তুতি চলছে।অপ্রকাশিত লেখাপত্র নিয়ে। এই অপ্রকাশিত লেখাগুলো সত্যি খুব বিপজ্জনক।বিশেষত যদি তা মৃত্যুর পর প্রকাশিত হয়।তখন আর লেখককে ধরা যায়না। যা বলে তাই অন্ধের মতো বিশ্বাস করে যায় পাঠক।

ফলে সব জায়গার মতো আমাদের ছোট শহরের সরকারও সতর্ক হল। ইন্দিরাকে ডেকে পাঠানো হল।লাল রঙের একটু খাটো পোশাক পড়ে এসেছিল ইন্দিরা। গায়ে একটা সিল্কের ফিনফিনে ওড়না।চোখে খুব ঘন কাজল। কিছু সরকারি আমলার ইতিমধ্যে লোল ঝরতে শুরু করেছিল।কেউ কেউ গোপনে টেবিলের তলায় পুরুষাঙ্গে হাত বোলাচ্ছিল।

যিনি প্রশ্ন করবেন,ইন্দিরার ওড়নার দিকে চোখ রেখে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন– তারপর?
ইন্দিরার উজ্জ্বল মুখটায় হঠাত কেমন অন্ধকার নেমে এল।মুখটা দেওয়ালের দিকে ফিরিয়ে অদ্ভুত ভাঙা ভাঙা গলায় বলল-
‘দীপ বলেছিল, ও কেবল নর্দমা দেখতে এসেছে।’
