অনন্ত সূর্যের আবাহনে

প্রিয় লেখক রুনোসুকে আকুতাগাওয়ার ‘নরকের পর্দা’ পড়তে গিয়ে একটি বাক্য খুব মনে ধরে ইংল্যান্ডের সারে কাউন্টির গিল্ডফোর্ডে থাকা বছর দশেকের এক পড়ুয়ার। বাক্যটি ছিল — ‘সূর্য এক এবং অনন্ত, তাই তাকে দেখতে এত ভালো লাগে।’ সেইদিনের সেই খুদে পড়ুয়া পরবর্তীকালের নোবেলজয়ী লেখক কাজুও ইশিগুরো। মাত্র পাঁচ বছর বয়সে সে জাপান ছেড়ে এলেও জাপান তাকে কখনো ছেড়ে যায়নি, আর ছেড়ে যায়নি জাপানি সাহিত্যের প্রতি তার সম্ভ্রম, অনুরাগ। প্রিয় জাপানি সাহিত্যিকের ওই একটি বাক্য বারবার ফিরে আসবে ইশিগুরোর লেখায়। রূপ-প্রতিরূপের নানা মোটিফে সূর্যকে আমরা পেয়ে যাব ইশিগুরোর লেখায়। কখনো ‘আ পেল ভিউ অব্ দ্য হিলস্’-এ ক্ষমার বিকেল এনে দেয় সূর্য, কখনো আবার ‘দি আনকনসোলড্’-এর সংশয়ের সন্ধ্যাকে ফাঁকি দিয়ে ডুবে যাবে সে। যেমনটা বলছিলাম, ইশিগুরোর লেখায় বরাবরই সূর্যের অনেক রূপ, অনন্ত তার ব্যপ্তি। তবে প্রত্যক্ষভাবে সূর্য একটি চরিত্র হয়ে উঠছে তার উপন্যাসে, এমনটা কিন্তু আগে দেখা যায়নি। দেখা গেল ওনার সাম্প্রতিকতম উপন্যাস (প্রকাশকাল ২০২১) ‘ক্লারা অ্যান্ড দ্য সান’-এ।

যেসব দুঃস্বপ্ন এতদিন সুদূর ভবিতব্যের সংস্রব হয়েই থেমে ছিল, তা এই উপন্যাসে ‘সম্ভাব্যতম বর্তমান’ হয়ে ধরা দিয়েছে। উপন্যাসের বিষয়বস্তু খুব সহজ। যন্ত্রপাতির সাহায্যে কৃত্রিম উপায়ে আশ্চর্য মেধাসম্পন্ন কিছু শিশু তৈরি করা হয়, যারা কেউ-ই মানুষ নয় আবার রোবট-ও নয়। এরা প্রত্যেকেই বিক্রয়যোগ্য ‘আর্টিফিসিয়াল ফ্রেন্ড’। এরকমই একজন ‘ফ্রেন্ড’ ক্লারা আমাদের উপন্যাসের কথক। ক্লারা যে দোকান থেকে বিক্রিত হয়, সেখানে সে এযাবৎ সারাদিন জানালার ধারে বসে সূর্যকে দেখত। ক্লারা জানে, সূর্য আছে বলেই প্রাণ আছে, সূর্য চাইলে মৃতদেরও বাঁচাতে পারে। ক্লারাকে কিনে নেয় প্রেইরি অঞ্চলের চোদ্দ বছরে কিশোরী জোশি-র মা। অচিরেই ক্লারা বুঝতে পারে, তাকে জোশির সঙ্গ দিতে কিনে আনা হয়নি বরং মারণব্যাধিতে আক্রান্ত জোশির অবর্তমানে জোশির বিকল্প হিসেবে রেখে দেওয়া হবে বলেই তাকে কিনে এনেছেন জোশির মা।

এই অবধি জানলে মনে হতে পারে, এ আর নতুন কী! ‘ক্লোন’ নিয়ে ইংরেজি ভাষায় বিস্তর সায়েন্স ফিকশন লেখা হয়ে গিয়েছে। ইশিগুরোর নিজের লেখা ‘নেভার লেট মি গো’ উপন্যাসেও আমরা পেয়েছিলাম ক্লোনিং-এর প্রসঙ্গ। সেই উপন্যাসের ক্যাথি অনেকাংশেই ক্লারার মতো। কিন্তু ‘ক্লারা অ্যান্ড দ্য সান’ এসবের চেয়েও অনেক বেশি কিছু আমাদের দেয়। ক্লারার মতো ‘অ-মানুষ’-এর থেকে আমাদের শিখতে হয় মানবিকতা। লোভ, স্বার্থ, সুবিধাবাদিতার বিপ্রতীপে দাঁড়িয়ে বন্ধুবাৎসল্য, পরার্থপরতা, ত্যাগের চরম শিক্ষা দিয়ে যায় ক্লারা। জোশির মা তাকে নেহাত ব্যবহার করছে জেনেও সূর্যের কাছে বন্ধুর প্রাণ ভিক্ষা করে সে। উল্টোদিকে, জোশির আরোগ্যলাভের বিনিময়ে সে নিজের শক্তিক্ষয় করতেও রাজি। গোটা উপন্যাস জুড়ে ‘আর্টিফিসিয়াল ফ্রেন্ড’ অভিহিত হয়ে চললেও প্রকৃত বন্ধুর পরিচয় দেয় ক্লারা।

যথেষ্ট দক্ষতার সঙ্গে ইশিগুরো চোখে আঙুল দিয়ে দেখিয়ে দেন মানুষ কতটা লোভী, কতখানি বর্বর এবং আত্মকেন্দ্রিক। ক্রমশ ক্ষয়িষ্ণু মানবিকতার প্রচ্ছন্ন প্রকাশে অপরাধবোধে ন্যুব্জ হতে হয় পাঠককে। জোশির মা যখন মৃত্যুপ্রত্যাশী সন্তানের বিকল্প হিসেবে ক্লারাকে কাজে লাগাতে উদ্যত হন, তখন নিজেকে মানুষ ভেবে লজ্জা করে। কত অনায়াসে তিনি সন্তানতুল্য ক্লারাকে নিজের পরিচিতি মুছে ‘নতুন জোশি’ হয়ে উঠতে বলেন। পৃথিবীতে কেউই অমর নয়, তবু প্রযুক্তির অবাধ সাহচর্যে নিজেকে ঈশ্বর ভেবে ফেলা অপরিণামদর্শী মানুষের পরিণতি দেখে গ্লানি বাড়ে।

ইশিগুরো এমনিতেই লেখেন কম। শঙ্খ ঘোষের ভাষা ধার করে বলতে হয়, ইশিগুরোর লেখায় ‘অবাধ প্রগলভতার প্রশ্রয় নেই।’ প্রায় পঁয়তাল্লিশ বছরের লেখকজীবনে ‘ক্লারা অ্যান্ড দ্য সান’ তার অষ্টম উপন্যাস। এ-বছরেরই ২রা মার্চ আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে প্রকাশ পায় ‘ক্লারা’।অতএব, গোটা বিশ্বের জীবনযাত্রায় কোভিড অতিমারির প্রভাব কিছুটা হলেও স্থান পেয়ে থাকবে এই উপন্যাসে। গল্পের শুরুতেই দেখতে পাই, ছোট-ছোট ছেলেমেয়েদের আর ইশকুলে যেতে হয়না ক্লাস করার জন্য। বাড়িতে বসেই কম্পিউটার স্ক্রিনে ক্লাস নেন শিক্ষকরা। ছাত্র-শিক্ষক সম্পর্ক ল্যাপটপের গণ্ডিতেই সীমাবদ্ধ। স্কাইপ আর গুগল মিটের জমানায় এসব আমাদের আর অচেনা ঠেকেনা। আর ক্লারা আরেকটি যে যন্ত্রের কথা বলেছে (যেটি সূর্যকে কালো আস্তরণে ক্রমশ ঢেকে দেয়), সেটিও আর নতুন বোধ হয়না আমাদের। বায়ুমন্ডল দূষণ এবং ওজোনস্তরে ছিদ্র দিনে-দিনে বাড়তে-বাড়তে গর্ত হয়ে যাওয়া, বিশ্ব উষ্ণায়ন— কোনোটাই আমাদের অজানা নয়। ইশিগুরো দেখাচ্ছেন, সূর্য এতটাই বিপন্ন যে তাকে মানুষের সঙ্গে রীতিমতো সওদা করে নিজের অস্তিত্ব টিকিয়ে রাখতে হচ্ছে। তেজস্বী সূর্যকে বলতে হচ্ছে, তাকে যদি দূষণমুক্তভাবে থাকতে দেওয়া হয়, তাহলে সে-ও মানুষকে আলো দেবে, শর্তসাপেক্ষে প্রাণের অফুরান জোগান দেবে।

খুব সূক্ষ্মভাবে ভেবে দেখলে বোঝা যায়, ইশিগুরো মোটেই সেই লিখিয়েদের দলে পড়েন না যারা প্রযুক্তির সমস্তটাকেই নেতিবাচক বলে উড়িয়ে দেন। মনে রাখা দরকার, ইশিগুরোর বাবা ছিলেন একজন সমুদ্রবিজ্ঞানী। অতএব, জন্ম থেকেই বিজ্ঞান আর প্রযুক্তির দীক্ষা পেয়েছেন ইশিগুরো। বিবিসি ‘হার্ড টক’-এ এসে বলেছিলেন, ‘আমি মনে করি প্রযুক্তির সঠিক ব্যবহার আমাদের অনেক প্রগতিশীল করে তোলে।’ এখন প্রশ্ন হ’ল, সঠিক ব্যবহারের মানদণ্ড ঠিক কী ও কতটা? কতটা অবধি মানুষের প্রযুক্তি-নির্ভর হওয়া প্রয়োজন ও উচিত? এসব প্রশ্নের যথাসম্ভব উত্তর লেখক তার উপন্যাসে দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করেছেন। পাঠকের কাজ শুধু সেসব উত্তর খুঁজে নেওয়া।

উপন্যাসের অন্যতম মনোগ্রাহী অংশটি হল সেইটি যেখানে জোশির মায়ের খামারবাড়ির পেছনের জমিতে ক্লারা মুখোমুখি সূর্যের, দু’জনের কথোপকথন চলছে, ক্লারার বন্ধুপ্রীতি দেখে বিহ্বল সূর্য ভুলবশত তাকে মানুষ ভেবে বলে, ‘তাহলে মানুষ-ও অন্যের জন্য কিছু করে!’ ইশিগুরোর তীক্ষ্ণ শ্লেষ আহত করে ‘মানুষ’ পাঠককে আর মনুষ্যেতর ক্লারা পরিচয় দেয় চূড়ান্ত মনুষ্যত্বের।

আমাদের ব্যর্থতা আমরা কেউ ক্লারা নই, আমরা মানুষ। তাই আমরা ডাকলে সূর্য নেমে আসবে না আমাদের কাছে।
