আমেরিকান লেখিকা লিডিয়া ডেভিসের জন্ম ১৫ই জুলাই, ১৯৪৫ সালে। ‘ফ্ল্যাশ ফিকশন’কে প্রায় শিল্পের পর্যায়ে নিয়ে গেছেন লিডিয়া। তাঁর অনেক গল্পই মাত্র একটি বা দুটি বাক্যে শেষ হয়েছে। ওই একটি বা দুটি বাক্য ঘিরে বিরাজ করে এক সর্বগ্রাসী শূন্যতা। তাঁর গল্পগুলি তাঁর কবিতার মতোই প্রসব-সম্ভবা। এইসব অতিক্ষুদ্র গল্পের পাশাপাশি লিডিয়া লিখেছেন অসংখ্য ছোট গল্প, উপন্যাস এবং প্রবন্ধ। অনুবাদ করেছেন ‘সোয়ানস ওয়ে’ এবং ‘মাদাম বোভারি’র মতো বেশ কিছু জনপ্রিয় ও শ্রেষ্ঠ ফরাসি গল্প-উপন্যাস। ২০১৩ সালে লিডিয়া ম্যান বুকার প্রাইজের জন্য মনোনীত হন। তাঁর ‘ভ্যারাইটিস অফ ডিস্টারব্যান্স’ তথা ‘বিরক্তির সাতসতেরো’ আরেকটি উল্লেখযোগ্য গল্পসংগ্রহ।

ইঁদুর

আমাদের ঘরের মধ্যেই ইঁদুরদের বাসা, কিন্তু আমাদের রান্নাঘরে তাদের টিকিটিও দেখা যায় না। এতে কি আমরা খুশি নই? অবশ্যই খুশি। কিন্তু মন তো একটু খুঁতখুঁত করবেই। আশেপাশের সব বাড়ির রান্নাঘরেই ইঁদুরদের অবাধ যাতায়াত। কিন্তু আমাদের বাড়িতে যে এত যত্ন করে ইঁদুর ধরা ফাঁদ পেতে রাখি, একদিনও তাদের কারও পায়ের ধুলো পড়লে তো! তেনাদের ভাব দেখলে মনে হয়, যেন আমাদের রান্নাঘরটারই যত দোষ। দুঃখ হয় না! বলুন! ব্যাপারটা আরও আশ্চর্য কেন জানেন? আশেপাশের বাড়িগুলোর তুলনায় আমাদের বাড়িটাই বরং বেশি অগোছালো। রান্নাঘরে যেখানে সেখানে খাবার দাবার পড়ে থাকে। স্ল্যাবের ওপর পাঁউরুটির গুঁড়ো পড়ে থাকে। মিটসেফের নিচের দিকে পেঁয়াজের খোসা জড়ো হয়ে থাকে। আসলে আমার কি মনে হয় জানেন তো? চারিদিকে এত এত খাবার খোলা পড়ে থাকে, যে ইঁদুরগুলো ঠিক সামলে উঠতে পারে না। রান্নাঘর যদি ঝকঝকে তকতকে হয়, তাহলে সেখান থেকে রাতের পর রাত যথেষ্ট পরিমাণ খাবার দাবার জোগাড় করা বেশ চাপের। অথচ ওরা ঘণ্টার পর ঘণ্টা অসীম ধৈর্য সহকারে একটা একটা করে দানা খুঁটে খুঁটে জোগাড় করে ওদের ভাঁড়ার ভর্তি করে। আমাদের রান্নাঘরে ব্যাপারটা ঠিক উল্টো। এত এত খাবার দেখে ওরা থতমত খেয়ে যায়। হয়তো বা সাহস করে দু এক পা বাড়াল, এত রকমারি খাবার আর তার তুমুল স্বাদু সুগন্ধ সমারোহ ওদেরকে গর্তের ভেতরকার অন্ধকারের দিকে তাড়িয়ে নিয়ে যায়। আসলে ওরা বেশ লজ্জায় পড়ে যায়। মানে ঠিক যতটা বুভুক্ষু ভাবে এইসব খাবারদাবার ওদের সাফ করে দেওয়ার কথা, ততটা পেরে ওঠে না বলেই বোধহয়।

ভ্রমণ

রাস্তার কাছে এসে মেজাজ হারানো, চলতে চলতে হঠাৎ নিরুত্তর, শুনশান পাইনের বন, পুরনো রেলব্রিজের ওপর দিয়ে চুপচাপ হেঁটে যাওয়া, নৌকায় যেতে যেতে কিছুক্ষণের জন্য হলেও ঝগড়া ভুলে যাওয়া, নদীর ধারে পাথরের ওপর বসে ভুলভাল কথা কাটাকাটি, জঞ্জালের স্তূপের সামনে অকারণ রেগেমেগে চীৎকার করে ওঠা, ঝোপের ধারে একলা হয়ে কাঁদা কিছুক্ষণ।

অদ্ভুত ব্যবহার

আসলে পরিস্থিতি ছাড়া কাউকেই দোষ দেওয়া যায় না। মনে করো আমি যদি দুই কানে বেশ করে তুলো ঠেসে জম্পেশ করে একটা মাফলার দিয়ে কান মাথা মুড়ে ফেলি, তুমি কি সত্যিই আমাকে অদ্ভুত বলে ভাববে? যখন আমি একা একা থাকতাম, আমার ঠিক যতটা শান্তি দরকার ছিল, ততটাই পেয়েছি।

ভয়

প্রায় প্রত্যেকদিন সকালেই আমাদের পাড়ার এক ভদ্রমহিলা “এমারজেন্সি! এমারজেন্সি!” বলে চ্যাঁচাতে চ্যাঁচাতে বাড়ি থেকে ছুটতে ছুটতে বেরিয়ে আসেন। তাঁর মুখটা আতঙ্কে ফ্যাকাশে হয়ে থাকে, আঁচল এলোমেলো হয়ে উড়তে থাকে হাওয়ায়। আমাদেরই মধ্যে কেউ না কেউ গিয়ে তাঁর হাত দুটো ধরে। জড়িয়ে ধরে শান্ত করে। আমরা প্রায় সকলেই বুঝি, আসলে ওনার কিছুই হয়নি। কিন্তু এটাও বুঝি, যে আমরা প্রত্যেকেই কখনো না কখনো এই ভদ্রমহিলার মতো হয়ে যেতে চাই। নিজেকে এই অবস্থা থেকে বাঁচাতে বেশ লড়াই করতে হয় আমাদের। কখনো কখনো আমাদের পরিবার এবং বন্ধুদেরও।

যা সব হারিয়ে যায়

সেসব হারিয়ে যায় ঠিকই, কিন্তু থেকে যায় এই পৃথিবীরই কোথাও না কোথাও। এদের অনেকগুলোই খুব ছোট, যদিও দুটি বেশ বড়। একটি হল কোট, অন্যটি কুকুর। ছোটখাটো জিনিষগুলোর মধ্যে একটা অবশ্যম্ভাবী হারানোর জিনিষ হল আংটি, অন্যটি বোতাম। এসবই আমার কাছ থেকে হারিয়ে গেছে, কিন্তু আছে অন্য কোথাও, হয়তো অন্য কারো কাছে। যদি তারা অন্য কারো কাছে নাও থেকে থাকে, অন্তত আংটিটা নিশ্চয় তার নিজের কাছ থেকে হারিয়ে যায়নি। আর বোতামটাও। তারা শুধু আমি যেখানে আছি, সেইখানে নেই।
