একমুঠো খেজুর

একদিন আমাদের প্রতিবেশি মাসুদ সম্পর্কে তার কাছে প্রশ্ন করেছিলাম, ‘আমার মনে হয় তুমি আমাদের প্রতিবেশি মাসুদকে পছন্দ করো না?’
দাদু নাকের ডগায় তর্জনী ঘষে উত্তর দিয়েছিল, ‘সে একজন অলস মানুষ এবং এ ধরনের লোকজন আমি পছন্দ করি না।’
আমি ফের প্রশ্ন করেছিলাম, ‘একজন অলস মানুষ (An Idiot Man) মানে কী?’
দাদু কিছুটা সময় মাথা নিচু করে রাখলেন, এরপর বিশাল ব্যাপ্তির মাঠের দিকে তাকিয়ে বলতে শুরু করলেন- ‘তুমি কি দেখতে পাচ্ছ এই খেজুর মাঠ মরুভূমির পাশ থেকে শুরু করে নীলনদ পর্যন্ত প্রসারিত? একশ ফিদ্দান। তুমি কি ওই সমস্ত খেজুর গাছ দেখতে পাচ্ছ? এবং ওই সব গাছ- স্যান্ট, আকাশিয়া ও সায়্যাল? এসব যা কিছু সব মাসুদের সম্পত্তি ছিল যা সে তার পিতার কাছ থেকে উত্তরাধিকার সূত্রে পেয়েছে।’

দাদু থামলেন। তার নীরবতার সুযোগে আমি ওই লোকটি থেকে আমার চেতনা দাদুর কথা মতো বিশাল ভূসম্পদের দিকে ঘোরালাম এবং মনে মনে বললাম, ‘আমি জানতে চাই না যে এই খেজুর গাছ বা অন্যান্য গাছ অথবা কালো-কঠিন ভূমির মালিক কে- আমি কেবল জানি যে এটা আমার স্বপ্ন ও খেলাধুলা করার ক্ষেত্র।’

এর মধ্যে দাদু পুনরায় বলতে শুরু করলেন, ‘হ্যাঁ দাদু, চল্লিশ বছর আগে এসব কিছু মাসুদের ছিল- কিন্তু এর দুই-তৃতীয়াংশ এখন আমার।’
এটা আমার কাছে একটি আকস্মিক সংবাদ ছিল। কারণ আমি মনে করতাম যে সৃষ্টির শুরু থেকেই এ সম্পদের মালিক দাদু।
‘যখন আমি এ গ্রামে প্রথম পা রাখি তখন আমার এক ফিদ্দানও জমিজমা ছিল না। এই সবকিছুর মালিক ছিল মাসুদ। এখন সে অবস্থার পরিবর্তন হয়েছে যদিও এবং আমি ভাবি যে আল্লাহ যদি চান তো বাকি অংশও আমি দ্রুতই কিনে নেব।’

আমি জানি না দাদুর কথা শোনার পর থেকে ভয় অনুভূত হল এবং প্রতিবেশি মাসুদের জন্য অনুকম্পা বোধ করলাম। দাদুকে কীভাবে বলব যে তিনি যেন এই কাজ না করেন। তখন আমি মনে করার চেষ্টা করছিলাম মাসুদের গান, তার মিষ্টি কণ্ঠস্বর এবং গড়গড়ার মতো শব্দের অট্টহাসি। কিন্তু দাদুকে আমি কখনওই হাসতে দেখিনি।

আমি দাদুকে জিজ্ঞেস করেছিলাম যে কেনও মাসুদ তার জমি বিক্রি করেছিল। এর উত্তরে তিনি এমন ভাবে ‘মহিলা’ শব্দটি উচ্চারণ করেছিলেন যে আমার মনে হয়েছিল ‘মহিলা’ মানে ভয়ঙ্কর কিছু। এরপর দাদু বলেছিলেন, ‘মাসুদ একজন বহু বিবাহিত মানুষ।’ আমি সঙ্গে সঙ্গে হিসেব করে দেখলাম মাসুদ এ পর্যন্ত উনিশ জন মহিলাকে বিয়ে করেছে। পরবর্তীতেই আমার তার তিনজন স্ত্রীদের কথা, তাদের জীর্ণ দশা এবং তার খোঁড়া গাধা, এর ছেঁড়া জিনের হাতা ও তার ছেঁড়া জোব্বার কথা স্মরণ হল। কিন্তু এগুলো মন থেকে সরিয়ে রাখলাম যখন দেখলাম সেই লোকটি ওই সময়ে আমাদের দিকেই এগিয়ে আসছে এবং দাদু ও আমি পরস্পরের দিকে তাকালাম।

‘আমরা আজকে খেজুর কাটব। আপনি কি সেখানে থাকবেন না?’ মাসুদ বলল। যদিও আমি বুঝতে পারছিলাম যে মাসুদ চায় না দাদু সেখানে থাকুক।
একথা শুনে দাদু আচমকা লাফ দেবার মতো ভঙ্গি করলেন এবং আমি দেখেছিলাম তার চোখ কিছুক্ষণের জন্য জ্বলজ্বল করছিল। তিনি আমার হাত ধরে সামনে এগিয়ে গেলেন এবং আমরা মাসুদের সঙ্গে খেজুর সংগ্রহের সেই স্থানে গেলাম।

কেউ একজন দাদুকে বসার জন্য একটি চৌকি এগিয়ে দিল এবং আমি দাঁড়িয়েই ছিলাম। সেখানে অনেক লোক উপস্থিত ছিল, যাদের প্রায় সবাইকে আমি চিনতাম। ওই সময়ে কয়েকটি কারণে আমি কেবল মাসুদকেই দেখছিলাম। এত মানুষের উপস্থিতিতেও সে কিছুটা আলাদাভাবে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল যেন এসবে তার কোনও বিষয় নেই; যদিও খেজুর সংগ্রহের ওই জমি তারই সম্পত্তি। মাঝেমধ্যে উঁচু গাছ থেকে খেজুর পড়ার শব্দ তার মনোযোগ কাড়ছিল। একবার সে একটি ছেলেকে লক্ষ্য করে চিৎকার দিল, যে ছেলেটি গাছের চূড়ায় বসে এক ছড়া খেজুরের ওপর কাস্তে দিয়ে কোপ দিচ্ছিল, ‘সাবধান, তুমি আবার যেন গাছের মাতি কেটে না ফেলো!’ কেউ তার কথায় কান দিচ্ছিল না এবং সেই ছেলেটি গাছের মাথায় বসে কাস্তের কাজ চালিয়ে যাচ্ছিল যতক্ষণে না আকাশ থেকে খেজুরের ছড়া মাটিতে না-পড়ে।

তখন আমি মাসুদের উচ্চারিত শব্দবন্ধ ‘Heart of the Palm’ নিয়ে ভাবনায় মগ্ন হলাম। আমি খেজুর গাছকে এমন কিছু ভাবছিলাম যার অনুভূতি আছে, যার হৃদয় আছে এবং তা স্পন্দিতও হয়। আমার মনে পড়ল, একদিন খেজুর গাছের ডাল নিয়ে খেলা করার সময় মাসুদ আমাকে যা বলেছিল- ‘শোনো ছেলে, খেজুর গাছেরও মানুষের মতো আনন্দ বেদনার অনুভূতি আছে।’ ফলে আমি ভিতরে ভিতরে অস্বস্তির মধ্যে পড়ে গিয়েছিলাম।

সামনে বিস্তৃত মাঠের দিকে পুনরায় তাকিয়ে দেখতে পেলাম সমবয়সী বন্ধুরা খেজুর গাছের ডাল ধরে মোচড়াচ্ছে এবং খেজুর পেড়ে জড়ো করছে যার বেশিরভাগই আবার খেয়ে ফেলছে। উঁচু টিলা থেকে বেশ খেজুর সংগ্রহ করা হল। দেখলাম, লোকজন একে একে আসছে আর ঝুড়িতে সেগুলো রেখে পরিমাপ করা শেষে বস্তা ভরছে যা আমি গুনেছিলাম ৩০টি বস্তা পর্যন্ত হয়েছিল। কোলাহল ভেঙে লোকজন চলে গেল। থেকে গেলো কেবল ব্যবসায়ী হুসেইন, মুসা যিনি পূর্বদিকে আমাদের জমির পরের জমির মালিক এবং আরও দু’জন ব্যক্তি যাদের আমি আগে কখনও দেখিনি।

আমি মন্থর হুইসেল শুনতে পেলাম এবং দেখলাম যে দাদু ঘুমিয়ে পড়েছেন। তখন আরও দেখলাম, মাসুদ সেই জায়গায় এখনও দাঁড়িয়ে আছে; তার মুখের মধ্যে খেজুর এবং এমন ভাবে চিবুচ্ছে যেন একমুঠো খাদ্য মুখে পুরে কেউ একজন বুঝতে পারছে না যে তার এখন কী করা উচিৎ।

দাদু হঠাৎ জেগে উঠলেন, দ্রুত উঠে দাঁড়ালেন এবং খেজুরের বস্তাগুলো দিকে এগিয়ে গেলেন। তার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে সেখানে গেল মুসা ও হুসেইন। মাসুদের দিকে তাকিয়ে দেখলাম সে খুবই ধীর গতিতে আমাদের দিকে এগিয়ে আসছে। তাকে দেখে মনে হচ্ছে কোনও এক ব্যক্তি কিছু একটা থেকে মুক্তি চাইছে কিন্তু তার পা বাধ্য করছে সামনের দিকে যেতে। সবাই খেজুরের বস্তা ঘিরে দাঁড়িয়ে তা পরীক্ষা করে দেখছে, কেউ আবার দু-একটা খেজুর মুখে চালান করে দিচ্ছে। দাদু আমাকে একমুঠো খেজুর তুলে দিলেন। আমি তা চিবোতে আরম্ভ করলাম। মাসুদ দু’মুঠো খেজুর নাকের কাছে নিয়ে আবার তা বস্তায় ভরে রাখল।

এরপর লোকগুলো মধ্যে বস্তাগুলো ভাগ করে দেওয়া হল। হুসেইন নিল দশ বস্তা, অপরিচিত দু’জন নিল পাঁচ বস্তা করে, মুসা নিলো পাঁচ বস্তা এবং দাদু রাখলেন পাঁচ বস্তা। কিছু না-বুঝে আমি মাসুদের দিকে তাকালাম, দেখলাম তার চোখ দুটো গৃহহীন ইঁদুরের মতো এদিক-সেদিক করছে। দাদু মাসুদকে লক্ষ্য করে বললেন, ‘তুমি এখনও আমার কাছে পঞ্চাশ পাউন্ড দেনা আছ। এ-বিষয়ে আমরা পরে আলোচনা করব।’

আমি দৌঁড়ে কিছুটা দূরে সরে গেলাম। শুনলাম পিছন থেকে দাদু ডাকছেন। কিছুটা দ্বিধাবোধ হলেও সামনের দিকে হাঁটতে থাকলাম। এই মুহূর্তে মনে হচ্ছে আমি তাকে (দাদুকে) ঘৃণা করি। আমি একটি গোপন বিষয়ের অংশীদার হলেও দ্রুত তা থেকে মুক্তি পেতে চাইলাম। হাঁটতে হাঁটতে নদীতীরের সেই আকাশিয়া গাছের নোয়ানো ডালের কাছে পৌঁছলাম। তারপর, আমি জানি না কেন, মুখের ভেতর দিয়ে গলার মধ্যে আঙুল ঢোকালাম এবং যে খেজুরগুলো খেয়েছিলাম তা বমি করে ফেলে দিলাম।
