মায়া অ্যাঞ্জেলো (১৯২৮-২০১৪), বিংশশতাব্দীর অন্যতম উল্লেখযোগ্য কবি, গায়িকা এবং সিভিল রাইটস অ্যাক্টিভিস্ট। প্রথম যৌবনের চড়াইউৎরাই কেটেছে রান্নার কাজ করে, যৌনকর্মী, নাইটক্লাবে নর্তকী হিসেবে। উপদ্রুত শৈশবে ধর্ষণের শিকার বালিকাটি ক্লিনিক্যালি মূক ছিলেন দীর্ঘ পাঁচবছর। অনেক এবড়োখেবড়ো এবং অন্ধকার অতিক্রম করে, মধ্যতিরিশে উপশম খুঁজে পেয়েছিলেন কবিতার কাছে। ১৯৬৯ সালে প্রকাশিত প্রথম আত্মজীবনী ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” তাঁর লেখাকে আন্তর্জাতিক পরিচিতি দেয়।

কবিতার কালো পাখিটি, সারাজীবন বলে গেছেন মেয়েদের, মানুষের সমানাধিকারের কথা।
