পল ভেরলেন | (১৮৪৪-১৮৯৬)

কবি হিসেবে বোদলের, র‍্যাঁবো ও মালার্মে-র সঙ্গে এক নিশ্বাসে উচ্চারিত হয় পল ভেরলেন (Paul Verlaine)-এর নাম। অন্যভাবে বললে, উনিশ শতকের শ্রেষ্ঠ কবিদের একজন তিনি। জন্ম ৩০ মার্চ, ১৮৪৪ আর মৃত্যু ৮ জানুয়ারি, ১৮৯৬। উনিশ শতকের শেষ ভাগ দেখেছে তাঁর দুরন্ত ও মাত্রাহীন অসংযমী জীবনের সঙ্গে প্রতিভাশালী এক কবিশক্তির স্ফূরণ, খ্যাতি ও মৃত্যু। নিজের শর্তে তিনি বেঁচেছেন। রাষ্ট্র, সমাজ, লোকভয় কিছুই তাঁকে নিরস্ত করতে পারেনি। কবিচেতনা তৈরি হয়েছে বোদলের পড়ে, এ কথা নিজেই বলেছেন ভেরলেন। বোদলের-এর “তীক্ষ্ণ ইন্দ্রিয়চেতনা, সূক্ষ নিপীড়িত মন, তামাকে চোবানো ইনটেলেক্ট ও অ্যালকোহলে পোড়া রক্ত” তাঁকে কবিতার জগতে প্ররোচিত করেছে। জন্মেছেন উত্তর-পূর্ব ফ্রান্সের মেজ শহরে, কিন্তু পিতার চাকরিসূত্রে বড়ো হয়েছেন প্যারিসে, এখানেই পড়াশুনা ও তাঁর চাকরি। তাঁর শেষ দিনগুলো কেটেছে ড্রাগনির্ভরতা, অ্যালকোহলিজম ও দারিদ্রের মধ্যে। কিন্তু কবি হিসেবে মানুষের ভালোবাসাও কম পাননি। তাঁর প্রথম দিকের রচিত কবিতা পুনরায় পড়া শুরু হয়েছে। যত তিনি মৃত্যুর দিকে এগিয়ে গেছেন, কবি হিসেবে তাঁর গুরুত্ব তত বেড়েছে। তাঁর প্রধান কাব্যগ্রন্থগুলো হল ‘লা বন শাঁসঁ’ (১৮৭০), ‘রোমাঁস সাঁ পারোল’ (১৮৭৪),‘সাগেস’ (১৮৮১), ‘যাদি এ নাগুয়ের’ (১৮৮৪), ‘আমুর’ (১৮৮৮) ও ‘বনর’ (১৮৯১)। অনূদিত কবিতাগুলো ‘পোয়েম সাত্যুর্নিয়েন’ (১৮৬৬) ও ‘সাজেস’ (১৮৮১) কাব্যগ্রন্থদুটি থেকে নেওয়া হয়েছে।

গোধূলিসন্ধ্যার স্মৃতি
অগ্নিবর্ণ দিগন্তে জ্বলেছে, তারা কাঁপে
শিখার ভিতরে আশা দূরে চলে যায়
বেড়ে ওঠে বিভেদের প্রাচীর যেমন
যেখানে অনেক ফুল, সেখানেই জাগে প্রহেলিকা
–ডালিয়া, ঝুমকোফুল, লিলি, ও টিউলিপ—
জাফরির চারপাশে বেড়ে ওঠে, ক্রমশ ছড়ায়
তাদের নিঃসৃত বায়ুপথে ভারী ও উষ্ণ সুগন্ধের
সঙ্গে বিষ
–ডালিয়া, ঝুমকোফুল, লিলি, ও টিউলিপ—
গ্রাস করে আমার চেতনা
মন এবং আমার যুক্তি
প্রবল মূর্ছায় মেশে গোধূলিসন্ধ্যার যত স্মৃতি।

বনের ভিতর

(Dans les bois)

সরল অথবা যারা অত্যন্ত অলস,
দেখি, শুধু তারাই বনের ক্ষীণ রূপ খুঁজে পায়
মুক্ত বাতাসে শ্বাসপ্রশ্বাস আর উষ্ণ সুগন্ধের কথা বলে, তারা সুখী!
অন্যরা সেখানে আটকে পড়ে—সন্ত্রাসের রহস্যজটিল স্বপ্ন দ্যাখে

তারা খুশি! আর আমি, স্নায়ুচাপগ্রস্ত, আর এক অনুতাপ
প্রবল ও অস্পষ্ট ভয়, উপশমহীন
বনের ভিতিরে যেতে গিয়ে আমি কেঁপে উঠি ভীরুর মতোন
যে শুধু ফাঁদের ভয় পায়, ভাবে মৃতের সঙ্গে দেখা হয়ে যাবে

এই বড়ো বড়ো গাছের শাখারা ঘুরেও দ্যাখে না,
যখন নিকষ কালো স্তব্ধতা নেমেছে, আরো বেশি ঘন ছায়া,
সব অন্ধকার আর অমঙ্গল-সজ্জা
আমাকে ডুরিয়ে দেয় সাম্ন্য অথচ এক গভীর সন্ত্রাসে।

গ্রীষ্মের সন্ধ্যায়, বিশেষত, সূর্যাস্তের লাল রঙ
মিশে যায় কুয়াশার ধূসর নীলের সঙ্গে,
যা রাঙায় আগুন ও রক্তকে; আর দূরে সন্ধ্যা-আরতির ঘন্টাধ্বনি
কানে আসে যেন এক শোকার্ত ক্রন্দন ক্রমশ এগিয়ে আসছে

প্রবল বাতাস ওঠে, গরম ও ভারী, আর শরীরে কম্পন
আসে আর চলে যায়, সর্বদা প্রবল হয় ছায়ার ভিতর
লম্বা ওক গাছের ছায়া আরো বেশি গাঢ়, তুমুল আচ্ছন্ন থাকে
গোটা পরিসরজুড়ে, জলাভূমি থেকে ওঠা বাষ্পের মতোন।

রাত্রি আসে। পেঁচা উড়ে যায়। এই সে মুহূর্ত
যখন ভেবেছি আমরা সরল পূর্বপুরুষদের সরল কাহিনি…
ঝোপের আড়ালে, ওইখানে, ওইখানে, উষ্ণ প্রস্রবণ
শব্দ করে যেন তারা হত্যাকারী, যোগ দেয় সংগীতানুষ্ঠানে।

রাতের আবহ

রাত। বৃষ্টি পড়ে। ধূসর আকাশ ছিন্নভিন্ন করে দেয়
সন্ধ্যার আকাশপটে দিনের তূণীর আর স্তম্ভ ছিল যত
লুপ্তপ্রায় গথিক শহর থেকে দূর অন্ধকারে।
সমতল। ফাঁসি-হয়ে-যাওয়া বিস্মিত মানুষে পূর্ণ ফাঁসিমঞ্চ
কাকদের ঠোঁটের আঘাতে কম্পমান
নাচছে অপ্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী দ্রুত তালবাদ্যের কালো বাতাসের মধ্যে,
যখন তাদের দুটি করে পা নেকড়েদের খাদ্য।
বিক্ষিপ্ত ও কাঁটাঅলা কিছু ঝোপ, আর কিছু
পূত বৃক্ষ প্রতিপালন করছে তাদের শাখার সন্ত্রাসকে,
ডান দিক ও বাঁদিকে,
এ পটভূমির কালিমাখা আজেবাজে জিনিষের ওপরে।
এরপর তিনজন পাঁশুটে কয়েদি, যারা খালি পায়ে ছিল
তাদের সঙ্গে লম্বাচওড়া প্রহরীরা মার্চ করে চলে
হাতে মইয়ের মতো দেখতে লৌহদণ্ড
উল্টোদিক থেকে আসা বৃষ্টির ছাঁটে জ্বলজ্বল করে ওঠে।

চেনা স্বপ্ন

(Mon rêve familier)

প্রায়শই এমন বিস্ময়কর মর্মভেদী এক স্বপ্ন দেখি
অচেনা রমণী এক, যাকে আমি ভালোবাসি, ভালো সেও বেসেছে আমাকে
সবসময় স্বপ্ন একই থেকে, তাও নয়
তবে খুব বেশি অন্যরকমেরও নয়—নারীটি আমাকে বোঝে, ভালোবাসে।

যেহেতু সে আমাকেও বোঝে, আর জানে স্বচ্ছ আমার হৃদয়
শুধু তারই জন্য, হায়! সমস্যা হয় না
শুধু তার জন্য এই আমার ফ্যাকাসে মুখের আর্দ্রতা যত মুছে যেতে পারে
মুছে যেতে পারে ভেজা কান্নার দাগগুলো।

তার চুল বাদামি, সোনালি, কিংবা লাল? জানি না তা।
নাম তার? মনে পড়ে অতি সহজ অথচ সাংগীতিক
অন্য সব প্রেমিকার মতো, জীবন যাদের পাঠিয়েছে নির্বাসনে।

দৃষ্টি তার মূর্তির মতোন
আর কণ্ঠস্বর তার দূরবর্তী, শান্ত এবং গম্ভীর
স্বরের ওঠানামা তার সেইসব কণ্ঠের মতোন, যারা স্তব্ধ হয়ে গেছে বহুদিন।

দুর্বল ভোরবেলা
প্রান্তরজুড়ে ঢেলে দিয়ে যায়
বিমর্ষতা
সূর্যাস্তের

বিমর্ষতা
ঘুম পাড়ায় মধুর গানেদের
আমার হৃদয়, যা ভুলে যায়
সূর্যাস্তের সঙ্গে।

অবাক-করা স্বপ্নগুলো
সূর্যের মতো
অস্ত যায় প্রতিটি আঘাতে,
রক্তাভ ভূতগুলো,বিরতিহীন হাঁটে
তাদের চলা যুদ্ধযাত্রা
বড়ো সূর্যের দিকে,
সূর্য ডোবে আঘাতে আঘাতে।

অভিমানী পদচারণা

(Promenade sentimentale)

সূর্যাস্ত ছড়িয়ে দেয় তার প্রধান রশ্মিগুলোকে
বাতাস দোলায় জলের লিলিকে
বড়ো লিলিগুলো ছিল গুল্মের ভিতরে
শান্ত জলের ওপর তারা দুঃখে জ্বলে উঠেছিল।
একা একা ঘুরছিলাম আমি
ক্ষতটি আমার সঙ্গে ছিল
পুকুরের ধার ধরে উইলো গাছের নীচে দিয়ে
যেখানে অস্পষ্ট এক তরল কুয়াশা
আবাহন করেছিল
ছায়াগ্রস্ত ভূত, হতাশায়
কেঁদেছিল হাঁসেদের মতো কণ্ঠস্বরে
মনে পড়ে তাদের ডানাঝাপটানো,
উইলো গাছের নীচে যেখানে হেঁটেছি আমি একা
হেঁটেছে আমার সঙ্গে আমার সে ক্ষত;
অন্ধকার আসে সূর্যাস্তের বড়ো বড়ো রশ্মিগুলো
ঢেকে দিতে তাদের বিবর্ণ তরঙ্গের ভাঁজে
জলের লিলিরা থাকে গুল্মের ভিতরে
বড়ো লিলিগুলো শান্ত জলের ওপর।

শোনো মধুর গান
যার কান্না শুধু তোমাকে খুশি করতে চেয়েছে অনুক্ষণ
খুব সংযত এ গান মৃদু, তোমাকে স্মরণ
যেন ফেনার ওপরে জল মৃদু কম্পমান

এই কণ্ঠ চেনা তোমার (এবং অতি প্রিয়)
তবু এখন ছদ্মবেশ এবং আড়াল
স্বামীহারানো দুঃখী নারী গাইছে কিয়ৎকাল
এখনও দ্যাখো গর্ব তার স্পষ্ট লক্ষণীয়,

তার পোশাকে লম্বা ভাঁজ, ভাঁজের ফাঁকে ফাঁকে
ফুঁপিয়ে ওঠে শরৎকালে হাওয়ার স্পন্দন

জবাব নেই, থাকে না কিছু, মৃত্যু আসে, কতদিনের চেনা।

সে শুধু গৌরবের কথাই বলে
সহজ হতে হয়েছে বাগাড়ম্বরহীন
সোনালি আর নম্র এক বৈবাহিক দিন
জয় না চেয়ে শান্তিসুখ চেয়েছে অন্তঃস্থলে।

স্বাগত জানাও, এখনও শোনো তার কণ্ঠস্বনন
যেখানে জাগে এই বিবাহের গান
এসো, এর চেয়ে উৎকৃষ্ট কীভাবে হবে আত্মার স্নান
কীভাবে আর দুঃখহীন হতে পারে মন?

দুঃখে আছে, এবং অপসৃয়মান
সে আত্মার কষ্ট খুব, তবু ক্রোধ নয় সর্বনাশা
অথচ দ্যাখো, কী স্পষ্ট তার সারগর্ভ ভাষা
তুমি শোনো এ মর্মকথা, গান!

আকাশেরও পক্ষপাত ধরা পড়ে
যখন বাঁকা ঢেউয়ের মধ্যে সিগাল দূরে
বিমর্ষ হয়ে ঘোরে

সূর্যালোকে
ও স্বাধীনতায় মত্ত,
প্রবৃত্তির দেখানো পথে সে উড়ে যায়
ব্যাপ্তির দিকে
গ্রীষ্মের মৃদুমন্দ হাওয়া বয়
সোনালি মেঘের ওপর দিকে
শান্তভাবে দরজা খুলে দেয় ঊষ্ণ
অর্ধচেতনে।

কখনও তার আর্ত চিৎকার ওথে
তাকে দূর থেকে সতর্ক করে দিক পাইলট
একসময় হাওয়ায় প্রশ্রয় তার,
ভেসে থাকে
আবার দ্রুতবেগের সঙ্গে নামে,
বিক্ষত ডানা তার
এদিকে ফেরে, তারপর তার
সে কী ক্রন্দন চিৎকার দুঃখী হৃদয়ের।

আমার তিক্ত মন
চিন্তিত ও উন্মত্ত ডানা মেলে উড়ে যায়

ক্লান্তিকর সহজ কাজের মধ্যে তুচ্ছ এ জীবন

ক্লান্তিকর সহজ কাজের মধ্যে তুচ্ছ এ জীবন
নিজেই নিয়েছি তুলে, চেয়েছি অনেক ভালোবাসা
উৎফুল্ল থাকো, বলি, যখন বিষণ্ণ দিন আসে একে একে
শক্ত হও, চলে যেতে দাও এই দিন সর্বনাশা।

শুনো না, শুনো না বড়ো শহরের গোলমাল হৈচৈ
প্রভু হে আমার, ডেকেছে গির্জার ঘন্টা চূড়া থেকে
শহরের এইসব নির্বোধ কাজের তুমি প্রতিপক্ষ হও
শুরু করো তুমি একই কলরব ওদের মতোই।

ঘুমোও পাপীর গৃহে, এই হোক অনুতাপ-রীতি
ভালোবাসো নৈঃশব্দ্য শুধুই, তবু কথাপাল করো
ধৈর্য এত প্রবল আকার, মধ্যে তার বৃহৎ সময়-ব্যাপ্তি

অবুঝ অনুশোচনা মিশে আছে অনম্য বিবেক-তাড়নায়
তার সব যত্ন করে দীন সততার
–ভুলে যাও, বলেন অভিভাবক দেবদূত, যার গর্ব
উচ্চ মূল্য চায়।

বড়ো শহরে জন্ম শিশুর

বড়ো শহরে জন্ম শিশুর
বিদ্রোহ সব স্তিমিত, পদানত
খুঁজেছি এত পেয়েছি এত
স্বপ্ন দেখার প্রবল আগ্রহ
কিছু নেই তার, সমস্ত দুঃসহ!

মৃদু কণ্ঠে জানিয়েছিলাম বিদায় তাদের
যারা বদলে যাওয়া পেয়েছিল টের
বিদায় স্ফূর্তি, সুখবিলাস
এবং ভালোবাসার ছিল যেসব অভিলাষ
আমার প্রিয় হে প্রভু, তোমার বাইরের!

আমাকে ক্রুশ তুলে নিয়েছে তার ডানায়
আমাকে নেয় চিরউদ্যমী দেশে
যেখানে শান্তি, প্রায়শ্চিত্ত অপার স্তব্ধতায়
এবং আছে তিক্ত বৃত্তি, অবশেষে
ন্যায়পরতা দেখতে চেয়ে অবহেলা জোটায়।

আমার প্রিয় বিনয় অবতার

দোলনার মতো এই আমি
কোনো হাত এসে ঠেলা দিক
ভূ-কক্ষের শূন্যতায়

  1. সবকটি কবিতাই দারুন। অনুবাদ অতি চমৎকার। ‘জানি না কেন তিক্ত আমার মন কবিতায় দ্বিতিয় স্তবকের প্রথম কাইন্টার অরথ বুঝিনি। আসলে শৃগাল শব্দের পরে যে শব্দ রয়েছে সেটি র অর্থ জানা নেই। শরতের গান কবিতাটি দেখলে মনে হয় লোরকার কবিতা পড়ছি। La gutarra, ভেরলেন উচ্চারণ হবে আজ জানলাম, আগে জানা ছিল ভেরলেইন।
