চার্লস সিমিক

সমকালীন মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের অন্যতম কবি চার্লস সিমিকের জন্ম ১৯৩৮ সালে যুগোস্লাভিয়ার বেলগ্রেড শহরে। ষোল বছর বয়সে তিনি তাঁর পরিবারের সঙ্গে আমেরিকায় চলে এসেছিলেন। ১৯৬৬ সালে প্রকাশিত হয় তাঁর প্রথম কাব্যগ্রন্থ,‘হোয়াট দা গ্রাস সেইস’।‘নাইট পিকনিক’, ‘হোটেল ইনসোম্যানিয়া’, ‘আনএন্ডিং ব্লুজ’ তাঁর বিখ্যত কাব্যগ্রন্থ। ১৯৯০ সালে ‘ দা ওয়ার্ল্ড ডাজ নট এন্ড’-এর জন্য পুলিৎজার পুরষ্কার পেয়েছেন সিমিক। এছাড়া গ্রিফিন ইন্টারন্যাশনাল পোয়েট্রি প্রাইজ, ওয়ালস স্টিভেনস অ্যাওয়ার্ড- এর মতো পুরষ্কার পেয়েছেন তিনি। ইউনিভার্সিটি অফ নিউ হ্যাম্পশায়ারে দীর্ঘদিন অধ্যাপনার পাশাপাশি ‘প্যারিস রিভিউ’ পত্রিকার কবিতা বিভাগটি সম্পাদনা করেছেন তিনি।

ক্রাচের পৃথিবী

চারদিকে শুধু ক্রাচ আর ক্রাচ
এমন কী সূর্যের আলোরও ক্রাচ লাগছে
ধোঁয়াকেও ক্রাচ নিয়ে ওপরে উঠতে হচ্ছে
আর বস্তির ঘরগুলো- একজন খদ্দেরের জন্য বরাদ্দ একটাই
-ওভাবেই সার বেঁধে কোনমতে হাঁটতে হচ্ছে

হ্যাঁ, একটা ক্রাচ নিয়েই হাঁটতে হচ্ছে…
পেছনের গাছগুলো বারবার হোঁচট খাচ্ছে বারবার
পিঁপড়েরা ছোটছোট খেলনা ক্রাচ নিয়ে হাঁটছে
আর বাতাস তার ভূতুড়ে ক্রাচ নিয়ে

একফোঁটা শান্তি নেই এখানেঃ
পাউরুটির গায়ে নকল পা লাগানো
হুইলচেয়ারের ওপর মাথাকাটা পুতুল
আর আমার মা, পেচ্ছাপ করতে বসার সময়
দুটো ছুরিকে ক্রাচ হিসেবে ব্যবহার করছে

 

ভয়

ভয় একজন থেকে অন্য একজনের ভেতর ঢুকে পড়ে
টের পাওয়া যায় না,
ঠিক যেভাবে একটা পাতা তার কাঁপুনি
এগিয়ে দেয় অন্য একটা পাতাকে

হঠাৎ করে গোটা গাছটা শিউরে উঠল
অথচ একফোঁটা হাওয়ার চিহ্ন নেই কোথাও

 

খেলনার কারখানা

আমার মা এই কারখানায় কাজ করে
আমার বাবাও এখানে কাজ করে

রাতের শিফটে
লাইনে দাঁড়িয়ে
সবাই পুতুলগুলোকে হাওয়া দিয়ে ফুলিয়ে
স্প্রিংগুলো ঠিক আছে কিনা দেখে নেয়

ফায়ারিং স্কোয়াডের
সাতটা পুতুলই
রাইফেল উঁচিয়ে নিশানা ঠিক করে
আর ঝটপট রাইফেল নামিয়ে নেয়

যাকে গুলি করা হবে
সে বারবার পড়ে যায় আর উঠে দাঁড়ায়
শুধু পড়ে যায় আর উঠে দাঁড়ায়
পুতুলটার চোখ বাঁধার রুমালের রঙ একদম কাঁচা

যে পুতুলগুলো কবর খুঁড়বে
তারা ঠিকঠাক কাজ করতে পারে না
তাদের হাতে ধরা কোদালগুলো খুব ভারি
কোদালগুলো সত্যিই খুব ভারি!

সম্ভবত এমনই হওয়ার কথা
এমনই হয় আসলে!
