চার্লস বুকোওস্কি | জন্ম ১৯২০

জন্ম জার্মানিতে। কৈশোরেই আমেরিকার লস অ্যাঞ্জেলসে চলে আসে তাঁর পরিবার। এখানেই বেড়ে ওঠা। ছোটবেলা ছিল অন্ধকারময়। নিজের বাবার হাতে শারীরিক ও মানসিক নির্যাতনের শিকার হতে হয় তাঁকে। সে বিষয় বহুবার ফিরে ফিরে এসেছে তাঁর লেখায়। প্রথম লেখায় আসা ছোটগল্প নিয়ে। পরবর্তীতে গল্পের পাশাপাশি লিখেছেন আত্মজৈবনিক উপন্যাস, নন-ফিকশন এবং অজস্র কবিতা। কবি হিসেবেই তাঁর পরম খ্যাতি। তাঁর বিখ্যাত কিছু কবিতার বই Poems Written Before Jumping Out of an 8 story Window, Love Is a Dog from Hell, Mockingbird Wish Me Luck প্রভৃতি। লিউকেমিয়ায় আক্রান্ত হয়ে ১৯৯৪ সালে মৃত্যু।

ওরা বলে— কিছুই নাকি হারায় না
হয় তাই-ই,
অথবা

সবই…

কী?

ঘুম-ঘুম…
এখন ভোর চারটে—
একটা শাদা অ্যাম্বুলেন্সের সাইরেন
কানে বাজে,
আর
একটা কুকুরের একাকী আশ্চর্য ভৌ—

ক্রিসমাসের সকাল হচ্ছে…

দৃশ্যান্তর 

দোকান থেকে একবার
একটা খেলনা খরগোশ
কিনেছিলাম।
এখন
ও বসেই থাকে
আর
তীব্র গোলাপি চোখে
আমার চোখে চায়:
ওর চাই গল্ফ-বল, কাচের দেয়াল—
আমি চাই শান্ত ঝড়।

আমাদের মাঝে আমাদের হতাশা জেগে বসে থাকে

স্বপ্নিল

ছোট্ট একটা ঘরে
আমি একা থাকি
আর
খবরের কাগজ পড়ি
আর
একাকী অন্ধকারে ঘুমের মধ্যে
ভিড়ের স্বপ্ন দেখি…

হুঁ

একা থাকার চেয়েও খারাপ
হাজারো জিনিস আছে
কিন্তু এ’কথা বুঝতে-বুঝতেই
কেটে যায় বহুযুগ
আর
বেশিরভাগ সময়েই
যখন বুঝতে পারা যায়,
বড্ড দেরি হয়ে গেছে তখন—

যার চেয়ে খারাপ আর কিছুই নেই

একজন লেখককে
তার টাইপরাইটার থেকে দূরে হটিয়ে দাও—
বাদবাকি
রয়ে যাবে
একমুঠো অসুস্থতা—

যা আঁকড়ে সে লিখতে শুরু করেছিল…
